Hoàng Vũ – somethingmaker
(b. 1996, Cần Thơ, Mekong Delta, Vietnam)
Vũ is a multidisciplinary artist based in Saigon (HCMC), working across sound, poetry, and visual and community-based research projects. Entirely self-taught, he is driven by a long-standing interest in space and phenomenology—once explored through painting, video games, and animation. Sound emerged as a transformative medium for him—capable of shaping hypersensitive spaces attuned to vibrations, moving beyond the illustrative. For him, sound is not only a mode of expression but also a method of inquiry—a way to probe, stretch, and open liminal spaces, ephemeral memories, unresolved fragments, and vanishing traces.
His recent project and research explores Hò—a vernacular call-and-response chant from the Mekong Delta, where he was born and raised—as a living form of sonic communication. By weaving these traditions into contemporary soundscapes, he traces how sound and collective memory flow through canals, echo on water, and fracture in the noise of present-day boat engines. The deeper he delves into the drifting nature of sound, the more he is drawn to aural traditions—practices that once tuned human breath to nature’s pulse—which can be reactivated through deep listening, experimental methods, and collective engagement.
“Once, I heard a broken Hò fragment from a radio on a boat—distorted by static, stretched by weak signal, merging with the boat engine’s roar. It was no longer the ‘original’ Hò, but in that fragmentation, it felt even more true to our time: compressed, displaced, no longer whole, yet impossible to erase.”
His works have been performed and presented at Nhạc Gãy, Tắm Đêm_nightswim, Liminal Dream, and MoTsound, and broadcast internationally via Montez Press Radio (New York) and 80000 Radio (Munich).
He is the co-founder of Tắm Đêm_nightswim—a fluid platform for sound, poetry, and performance; the organizer of MoTsound—an experimental sound initiative; and the project manager and head technician at MoT+++/A.Farm—an artist-run residency program in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut (HCMC).
Previously, he published poetry in Noone Magazine issue 2 (Vietnam–Netherlands), and participated in group exhibitions spanning painting and visual art at Nổ Cái Bùm Art Festival, Moiland (Đà Lạt), A.Song (Đà Nẵng), MoT+++, and A.Farm (Sài Gòn). He was also part of the Cù Rú Bar/Saola community and worked as a senior video game concept artist.
